Daily Life...

The Rain is falling , beginning at first with spritzes of water,
and continueing on with big droplets pressing down. All the
while the house is dark. The want is to be in jammies pulls but
we dress anyway. The little one is all hands and feet, more hands.
She takes what she wants and then tosses it without a care.
She is a toddler with a will power more powerful than superman.
She wants what she wants. The temper tantrum times have
come. The correcting and recorrecting, following her with my
radar eyes. I can't look away because if I do distruction will ensue.

Spirit bounces for attention. He quietly plays but will eventually
erupt in an explosion of " that is enough baby sister can't have it all."
He will begin the tiger dance bouncing from floor to sofa to chair and I
will steadly correct and recorrect. He will bounce to the kitchen and
complain that he can't do this or he can't do that. After an hour or
so settling down beside me realizing in himself that that is all he
wanted from the start. I recognize it. He is growing and changing so much
because he is beginning to recognize it too.

Superboy is quiet, working on his workbox, reading and rereading.
Gathering his new sewing project. Enjoying the stitching the artistic
part of hands, eyes, color and texture. Whipping up breakfast
in the mix. A solid young man, learning to be more responsible.
Managing now more than I think at times. Spirit bounces through
and Superboy gives him the patience of a saint. Not always but
today it's there and needed and thankful for it.

Princess prepares for testing. Fixing her hair, straightening
her clothes. I think she enjoys the friends more than the test.
She chatters away uncharacteristically of her lately reminding me
of her early years when she chatters for hours. She has me alone in
the car and knows I have no where to run. The rain slowy changes to
snow, little flurries and flakes. Then back to rain again as I ride
back home to work through lessons again.

The sewing machine humms as dad works on making cute
little jammies for Sweet pea. She hovers over eyeing up the
material. His caloused hands work the materal through. Being
unemployed creates time for odd things. He is trying to keep
busy. Gone are the days he layed on the sofa feeling sorry
for himself. I am glad for the domestication. At times it feels
as if we almost have changed roles. I am hovering slightly in
and slightly out. Its a strange feeling and difficult at times to find
my place. Rather this than the other.

Emails come through and are read. A wonderful opportunity
to write letters to orphan children in Africa. We jump on this.
The boys will love their new pals if all goes well.

Back through the rain to pick up Princess. The hotel humming
with talkative moms. Some questioning their ability to teach.
Amazes me that teachers question what they teach how they teach
and if they can or supernova moms bragging of their abilities
while others cower to the sides. A fleeting thought wonders if all they
say is true or wishes. I stay silent and anxiously await princess.
Our return home is flakes of snow again and princess animatedly
talking while hands and water bottle waving. The lid pops off
and water flies in all directions. Surprised eyes and lots of giggles.

Home again to eat and work through a few lessons but
the school day is pretty well done. The mess sits and stares me in the eye.
The children have chores but its not everything. I see the dust behind
the dust. I pick up a few things as I work to ready for work. The
dust will just have to grow more dust behind more dust. It will wait.
The attic calls me as I pass it. I am so anxious to get up there
and organize all the handme downs that are awaiting in boxes all
mixed match together and to dig through boxes of crafts looking for
yarn for our next activity. Always and always running my hands over
the books stacked in piles and picking new for the month a bit behind
a bit late but never to far off. My room piled at the moment in clothes.
Clean clothes on dressers on beds and a few dirty on the floor
reminding me of my teen days. I'll locate the floor this weekend.
It's under there somewhere.

Dad is done with the Jammies. It looks a little like a heart colored
feed sack. She giggles and runs and runs in her simple sack.
She enjoys the freedom of body and movement. Sister wrinkles
her brow as if to say what is that but Sweet pea giggles and doesn't
mind dads attempt at jammies. Eventually snuggling on his chest
on the sofa and sleeping soundly in her sack dress.

I head closer to the door and get my drink for the evening. I take one and fill it
again with water as I work. My mind is on camp and hours I may work. Summer
is questionable.. work is needed. I gather my things and sneak out.
No one notices my exit. They are all into lesson on their own, chores,
toys, or babies napping. I stop on the porch and listen in ... I ochestrate
what is happening the few hours I am gone even when I'm not present.
I can picture what I have asked of them will be done till I return and we
will enjoy family time. Superboy will do his online games, revise some
history and work on revising a writing assignment . Chores will get done
like dishes and vacuuming. Spirit will do more bouncing and playing.

On my way to school I think of Heart she has worked so hard
lately to fullful her dreams. I think of her sitting at the funeral
with her dad, of her friend that took his own life. What could
make a person take their life? What went so terribly wrong.

After care means a stop at the school office and down the long
hall past all the art drawings on the wall. To the cold damp cafeteria.
Always cold. Soon the smiles will come. Smiling faces come and
chatter away. Miss Nikki guess what ? Miss Nikki look at this. I smile
at each of them they remind me so of my little ones. They have such
a special place in my heart. Snacks, homework (more lessons) ,
dance contests, matching games, hula contests, the list goes on.
A big playtime at work. Then home to do more of the same.

I pick Heart up on the way home. She is quiet for awhile
and then tells of the days sadness with soft tears in her eyes.
I'm glad to have our car rides together to share with each other.
I sit and listen. Always listening always supporting. This is a mom.
Its our only quiet time.

I enter home as If I was gone all day.. MOM is home!!
Guess what mom? Look what I did while you were gone?
Sometimes I think they appreciate me more for leaving for
2-3 hours. I smell dinner. Dad domesticated again cooking away.
I sit tired , little ones snuggle around me. The day is about done.
No, maybe not we need... Baths , teeth, stories and more snuggles before
sweet pea and I drift off to sleep on the sofa with Spirit attached
to my feel .Using my feet as a pillow. I wake and slug up stairs.

The day is done. Until I do it again tomorrow. The weekend is close.

Outer Space

We have trekked into the sphere of the unknown and have come
back to tell you about it. This unit was a huge hit. Spirit loved
every moment of it. I have a few photos to share but most of the
lessons I pulled from came from other talented families.
It was so easy to prepare. Thank-you to all those that shared
their hard work for us to have an easy fun unit. I began the unit by
splitting it up into manageable activities. I started inward and moved
out. We began with the Earth itself . Then
moved to the moon, the sun, Star, planets and the Galaxy. In
no particular order here...

We did start out with a poster that read.... Things I know . Things I'd like
To know. Spirit knew what existed in space but nothing more.
Now he knows how the earth moves around the sun. That the sun
is a star, and much more.

Making Learning Fun has this great dot paint page. We used
pom pom balls to create the A. You can also find Build a Rocket
which Spirit Absolutely loved. He played over and over you can find
that at this link Making Learning Fun

This activity with the paper Rocket is mine. We used shapes
to create the rocket then Spirit Wrote his name on each Square.
He glued his name on and added some fun glitter stickers from
walmart. This neat fun easy activity is now hanging on our refrigerator.

I printed out these stars from the
Man on the Moon from Musings of Me
printable activities. We used some wooden stars
we had to add and subtract stars using our addition
and subtraction dice.

Counting Coconuts has a wonderful song to help your child learn
the 8 planets. (I am still stuck on 9 from the old thinking that pluto was
a planet)

You will also find here at Counting Coconuts Star pasta pouring, spooning
marbles (they look like mini planets) earth lacing, sifting for planets
Space playdough, memory match, Tracing constellations
and a wonderful Sensory tub. There is so much more here you
have to look to see it all.

If you have older children they might be interested

Funny things They Say....

5 is that Great age of Silly. The things that come out
of the mouths of the wee one.

Spirit: Mom how do we know that Sweet Pea is a girl?

Mom: Well, lets see there are things about us that
are the same and things that are different.
(hoping he figures this out on his own by thinking it through)

Spirit: Like what?

Princess: (chiming in) I have eyes, and you have eyes,
I have ears and you have ears, I have a mouth and you
have a mouth. I have lungs and... (Pauses for Spirit to finish
the sentence)

Spirit: That's It I don't have lungs!!

Well I guess that solves it. End of discussion.

Comes to me squeezing his tummy..

Spirit- Mom Check out my Abs. Princess says
I have Abs.

Mom- Really

Spirit- Yes and look at my muscles. I'm so strong
I can pick up Baby Sweet pea..

Have a lovely weekend.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!

I Ran all of our rummage to the church today. It took the kids
and I an hour to load the van, 20 minutes to drive there,
10 minutes to unload and another 20 min. drive back. Now I
have this nice big space in my attic.. Hmm what to store there now.
We used our entire alloted time for lunch break to move around
our junk. That will teach us to not save so many things for no reason.

I did find a little box of little board books just right for sweet pea.
She was so excited about them. She sat and looked at
the pictures and sorted them in her little hands. Only to drift
off to sleep a little while later.

Stop by for some neat St. Patrick's day
math ideas.

5 Fun Facts about St. Patrick's Day....

1. Saint Patrick was from Britain. He was forced into slavery
in Ireland . He was converted while there to Christainity.

2. The Shamrock is used to explain the Trinity.
Father , Son , and Holy Ghost.

Cheddar and Chipmunk

Spring is in the air. It's not quit here yet but I know
it's on the way when the peeps begin peeping. When
I was little we always had some sort of little
critter brand new to love and cuddle. Sometimes
it was chicks, sometimes ducks and sometimes
bunnies. My dad loves animals. This year he got
some peeps to help celebrate Superboys birthday.
It was love at first sight.

He named them cute names like chipmunk and cheddar.
I can't remember what he named the third one.
These adorable little critters will stay with my dad
and Superboy their new dad will have visitations. :)

10 Second Tag

This game is a great game for groups and keeps the kids
moving. Especially good for Wiggly kids.

Supplies needed: Whistle
Large group of wiggly children

Playing area- Narrow down a game area.
We use half of a basketball court and use
cones to determine the area.

How to play:

Count children off by 2s, so that you have two
teams. One team will be the taggers and the
others will try not to be tagged. The children
being tagged can run anywhere in the playing
area. The taggers line up and will run one at
a time. When the whistle is blown one tagger
will run out into the play area and try to tag
someone. They have ten seconds to tag a runner.
If they tag a runner . The tagged person gets in
line behind the other taggers. The person that tagged
the runner gets to now be the runner. The Leader
blows the whistle every 10 seconds to keep
the game moving. At each 10 second and new runner
is in play. Very active and coaches watch
the blowing 10 seconds it can make you light

Weekly Wrap-up

What a week it has been. There were many ups
and downs, yet I feel it was a productive week.
My children worked so hard on their lessons. Superboy
finally made it a point to add those puncuation marks
and capital letters. I suppose he is tired of me having
him redo them. I won't cheer to loudly just yet we will
see what next week brings. He was in great humor this
week probably because of his Birthday. Princess worked
just as hard finishing up a bunch of lessons on Blackboard.

It has been two years now of working along side superboy
to get him to become more organized. I think I am finally
beginning to see some progress. At times I wanted to
just let him be a mess. I don't want messiness to be
a problem for his one day family. I can see how that creates
stress for people. This is not something I want for his
future. There are larger problems in our lives to handle.
It has taken much effort from me to get him organized.
It is a constant job of checking and rechecking. As I
speak his clothes from last night are sitting at his computer
desk. If I blink for a second he forgets. I have to remind
him continually to take baths and brush his teeth. Although
I assume that is normal for an 11 year old boy, soon
enough I probably won't be able to get him out of the

It was a trying week too in that I got news I didn't really
like. It was rather difficult to take. I won't share here but
I know many of you pray for our family and will ask for
strength in what our future will bring. We are also on the
verge of another big change . Hopefully I can bring good news in a
few days. Our family is in need of some good news and yet
if it doesn't come we will continue on.

We'll off to our Saturday. Generally I do the same
thing every week. Clean the house, prepare lessons for
home , church, co-op and clubs for work. It's a long process.
One I am hoping to get a break from soon. I need
something fun to jump in there and create a fun change.

Happy Birthday Superboy!!

Happy Birthday Superboy who was born March 3, 2000.
You are offically 11. We are celebrating next week but
Gram and Pap came last night with a surprise pizza and
some gifts. Thanks for making his day special. Here are
a few recent photos taken of him.

Heart took all of these photos. I love the snowblowing one.
I think it shows Superboys gentle spirit. He is such a kind
hearted boy.

Yet not very athletic. He'd prefer to roll in the snow than run or walk
in it. (hoping for no more snow this year. )

He is Gentle, Artistic, Happy, Calm, loving, son.

Happy Birthday Buddy.

Thursday, March 3, 2011

I created this vocabulary sheet very simple but will be so
effective while practicing his first 4 units. We are using
the Sadlier Oxford color levels. This is level Orange.
Superboy needs more practice than is in his workbook.
Here are a list of ideas in using this simple worksheet...

1. Reading- Practice reading by going down the rows.
If he reads a word correctly he can place a bean on the
word to mark the word correct. You can keep track of
the words read at the bottom of the page and try to
improve daily.

2. Highlight words read- Take a highlighter and highlight
the words that are called out. You can call out specific
colors to make things more fun. You can change it up by
saying a pink square around stun. Maybe create a pattern.

3. Definition match- Call out the definition and match
them to the word. Try to get four definitions in a row
correct. Highlight or mark with a bean, button, eraser

4. Definition- How many X and O can you get. Have
your child choose a word. Read it and tell the definition.
If they are correct they write an X over the word if they
are incorrect they write an O. See how many X's you can

Lastly upon viewing the vocabulary site I realized that
they have games for each leveled book. You can find
Them at Vocabulary color levels. If you want to print
out my simple worksheet look on the sidebar in my
file4share folder.

Prefix and Suffixes

This activity is based on the Barton Reading and
spelling program book 5. I took all of the prefixes
and suffixes and created a clothes pin game for each
as a practice. For example in the box above you see the word Not in the square. Not is the meaning of one of the prefixes. Un would be the answer so the child would use a clothes pin to cover
that answer. You can change it up by using chips or
toys to cover it up as well. You can find this
printable in my file for share on my side bar or
Prefix and Suffixes.

Let me know how it works for your student.

Keep in Touch

I would love to hear from you. Feel free to comment or leave a message in my message box. I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thank- you for visiting Angels of Heart.

Rejoice in the Lord Always.
