What Makes a HERO...

Art by Superboy Age 9

What makes a person a hero...

Is it doing something amazing like being shot out of a cannon?
Is it having God like powers?
Is it giving all you own to the the needy or to anyone?
Is it a person who gives out rewards or prizes?
Is it saving a persons life from an accident or from substance abuse?
Is is being a famous athlete, actor or politician?
Is it a sandwich..?

The dictionary defines a hero as each of the above. I have
been thinking about what a hero is to me this week after reading
Chapters 1 and 2 in the book of Ruth.

My study bible says " A hero is easier to admire than to define."
Hero's often are unconscious of being a hero. They aren't always
known as hero's to those they meet. A hero is someone who does
the right thing at the right time. Boaz in these chapters of Ruth
demonstrates his heroism by keeping his word, being sensitive to others
needs, having integrity and taking responsibility for his actions.
Something maybe not to many men have in our society today.
(or women)

My guy Superboy loves the superhero comics, where justice prevails.
The villain usually has some sort of scheme to take over the world, but
the hero always get his man. The old good vs. evil. These Characters
that Boaz demonstrates is qualities I would like to give and recieve
from everyday people. Many friends have helped us this year. Have
been by our side through much struggle. I have questioned God.. I have
questioned why I am here when the struggles are so overpowering at times.
Yet through all of this.. Through all the financial, Heart failure,
Strife in the news and spiritual warfare. I have come to realize that all
along God has been with me. (and with you) He has been with my entire family
in the form of mini heros. Each one coming to us as ordinary people who
do NOT define themselves as such, because of their powerful
character they do not see it. I no longer question God. God is as he
does. Love prevails all anguish, all struggle and all of time. God's love. Those
simple moments of standing by what you say, helping when we cried for
help made such a difference to our family. God does all those things and
you can too. So maybe you don't know your a Hero but today I say
you are. My hope is that my sons and daughters will see and follow His
(Jesus) example and That I may also lead the life of a Hero...

Doing what is good and right.
Doing as I say I will.
Taking responsibility for my actions
for my family.
Loving those who can't love themselves.
Showing intergrity.

So ladies I say pick up your dust mops, wash those little faces,
smile with joy, read stories with enthusiasm, keep your promises
of snuggles and baked cookies because you too are a HERO!!

Outside My Window....
The Sky is gray and rainy. We were supposed to get freezing
rain but I don't think we are getting that. It has been actually
a warm 40 degrees lately.

I am Thinking.....
About our new van... Yesterday we finally picked it up!
It is a 2001 Dodge Caravan such an upgrade from our old
beat up van and just in the nick of time too. Since I am sure
the transmission is going out in our old blue van. I won't be sorry
one bit to see it rest in the neighborhood junk yard.

Health Care....
Last week several of us had that nasty stomach bug going
around. So glad that that is gone and out of the way.

I havedeveloped a nasty cold sore . I used to get these much more than
I do now. I "out grew the frequent outbreaks." This one is a terrible
one though. My bottom lip is soo swollen. Sunday Sweet pea is to
be baptised and I will be standing before all with this horrible sore.
Hopefully it will be smaller by then.

Daddy has been stable this entire week. He had an appointment
last night and had to be given a little insulin but other than that
he is progressing along. He has to go today and refill his prescriptions
and later go for more bloodwork. The good news is that he
doesn't have to visit the dr. now until May. So that means no more
monthly visits. He is however still off work. I guess that also means
we will be on unemployment until May..

Morning Sounds...

I hear cooing noises as I lay in bed. Lil giggles and then
quiet. I sneak to the bathroom for my morning bath.
I see Superboy across the way reading a book in the early
morning. As I close the door I hear his quiet feet walk to
the baby room. This is a normal routine. He doesn't like her
to wake alone. As I go about my morning routine I hear
Sweet pea begin to babble again. Superboy talks softly
to her. I then hear loud steps and I know Spirit is awake.
His feet are always loud and fast across the floor.
Sweet pea is beginning her first sounds .. DaDaa Dadda
Spirit giggles and yells she called me dada.. Superboy
laughs along with him. They beg her to say it again.
I envision her smiles across her little face. He eyes shining
at these two lil men. Wondering up at them with love
and encouragment. I am done my morning routine but
pause and listen.... morning is my favorite time of
day, when all are fresh, renewed and ready for the new
day to begin. I wish for the sounds to always be with me.

I smile and put this moment away in my memory....

Keeps those you love close and the cherish the small moments.

Journaling with a Novel

Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner

Here is an exert from the back of the book...

"Little Willy has a big job to do. His Grandfather refuses to get out of
bed, so it is up to Willy alone ot save their farm form the tax collector.
But where can a ten-year old get the five hundred dollars in a hurry? Then
Willy sees a poster for the National Dogsled Race.
The race pits Willy against the best dog teams in the country, including
the Indian Stone Fox and his fiver beautiful Samoyeds, who have never
lost a race. And Stone Fox wanst the prinze money as badly as Willy
does. Willy's dog, Searchlight, is every bit as fast as the
competition, and Willy knows the terrain better than anyone.
But can one boy and one dog be a match for the unbeatable Stone Fox

Superboy Created this Journal to go along with the book. Each
chapter he wrote a journal entry as if he were Little Willy in the
story. I wanted to work a little on his writing skills and creativity.
This was a fun activity. Here are some other things you can do.
We did not dig in this deep but wanted to save the links incase
Spirit wants to read this story one day too.

Outside My Window....
The sun is shining and maybe melting all of that snow. Although
we are supposed to get a few more inches this evening into
tomorrow. Time will tell.

I am Thinking.....
About my schedules for the week. Working on some
plans. We took today off to regroup after a crazy weekend.
Somehow someone stole or there was a huge bank error in that
a large sum of our money disappeared from our accounts. It is a terrible
lose since that was our savings for health issues and our new van. :(
When it rains it pours. There must be a reason this happened. There
is an investegation underway to see what happened to it. We pray it will
be returned to us.

Health Care....
We had a scary moment this week with dad . His feet swelled
up so bad his toes tingled. That is not a good sign. He took care
in droping his fluid intake overnight into the next day, only sucking
on ice. That is soo hard when you are thirsty to force yourself not to
drink. It is odd in away because it is the total opposite of what
a person is normally is told to do. I am happy to report that we were
able to get things under control ourselves. I was sure we were
making a trip to the ER.

Valentine Crafts

Happy Valentines Day everyone....
We will be celebrating God's love all week long , but wanted
to share some of our crafty fun from this past week.

Since we are not attending any special valentines parties this
year, we decided to have one at home. Each of the children were
given treats to share with their siblings. They took those treats and
paper supplies to create Valentines for the others. I have not seen
all of them yet , but I do know what Spirit made because I helped him.

We made playdough cupcakes to give out. Playdough is so him..
I made the playdough with this recipe.

1 cup flour
1 cup warm water
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon oil
1/4 cup salt
food coloring
Mix all ingredients, adding food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until
smooth. Remove from pan and knead until blended smooth. Place in plastic
bag or airtight container when cooled. Will last for a long time.

He formed the balls to make them . Then added glitter heart
stickers to the top and sequins around the sides. After this photo
I put them in plastic bags with ribbons around the tops to keep
the dough soft for playing.

The next craft we made was a heart name bug. The letters of
Spirits name was on each heart. I colored them out with pink in
the paint program , but you get the idea. He had to then put the
letters together to spell his name and decorated his Valentine bug.
This really came out adorable. A lovely refridgerator decoration.

Lastly we strung beads onto a pipe cleaner then formed them
into hearts. I only have Spirits pictured here but the older children
had many more beads on them. He tends to tire of this task
rather quickly. (we happened to have beads left over from our
candy canes at Christmas)

Share in the love and peace with your family today.

PreSchool Valentine Math...

Over the last week or so Spirit has been practicing math skills with
a fun Valentine theme. Here is what we came up with...

First Spirit did this worksheet. He had to guess how many hearts he
thought would fit in the big heart. He guessed 3. He was way off..
Here is where the worksheet came from
Conversation Hearts Estimation Activity.

We sorted a box of candy hearts onto a heart sheet. This one had
white as one of the choices but our box only had blue so we put
it where the white was supposed to be if we had any. Then we
graphed it onto this chart below and decided which had more, less
or equal. You will find these worksheets here....

This number game I came up with on my own. I used our number cards
and shuffled them onto a pile. I had bought some glitter puffy
heart stickers at walmart for $5. for crafting but thought this would be
Fun to do first. Spirit chose a card and then counted out that many hearts.

Patterning... Again we used the heart stickers. I could have made
the sheets so the stickers stayed in place but decided to just put a row on for
him and then he had to copy that row. He had fun trying to trick mommy with
his own patterns. Then played with his sister later. This one was a huge
hit with him.

Tissue Valentine

We printed out a coloring page for Valentines day. Then
covered it with tissue paper. We added a little water to our glue
to spread it on the tissue. The idea came from using vinegar over
the tissue paper and then when the paper dries the color from
the paper is left behind. Since we are snowed in and didn't have
any vinegar we went with the glue idea instead but you could use

My preschooler enjoyed this activity but I was more surprised
that the older children enjoyed it more.

Water Color Fun...

Yesterday we created these fun water color projects. I like using
water colors so much with a preschooler. There is less mess to clean up
and it's easy for children to use. There are many techniques you
can use as well. Here we used a crayon resist technique for Valentines
day. Spirit is learning about the letter X. So we put lots of Valentine
Kisses X and Hugs O all over his paper. He had a little trouble pressing
hard enough but you can still vaguely see the X and O. This is a fun
idea to do with an elementary student as well. Mom can write on
with the write crayon a special word or spelling word and the child
will paint to reveal the secret. I have done this several times in Sunday
school with Jesus' name.

This polar bear painting idea came from one of my favorite blogs
I simplified it for Spirit to do during his Eskimo study. I drew and
cut out my own simple shape for the polar bear but you can find the
pattern on The Artist Women's blog. I cut the bears out of card stock
and taped them down with painters tape. I showed Spirit and example
before hand so he could see we had to add paint all around the bear.
After it dried we added a little flare with snowflake sequins.

Winter Storm 2010

We have been Shoveling and shoveling show around here. Over
the weekend we got 2 foot of snow. We finally shoveled
completely out and now...... this.... at least another foot has
fallen here and it is to continue to 7pm tonight. This is my
mini van. I hate the color of it but now you can barely see
that tacky blue because it is all white. Hopefully this weather
stops so we can pick up our new van soon.

Take a peek at the picinic table. There is not eating happening
here right now..

This is the bush in our front yard. Poor little bush only his
top branches are visible.

This is the tree across the road. All covered in snow. Some of
The trees are falling down over there from the weight. We are
supposed to have blizzard like conditions the rest of the day
with possible power outages.

Valentine Download and Go

Our time is valuable. I want to make sure that I spend as much of it
with my family as I can. I am home with my children because I want
to love and care for them. With all the demands of life it is so nice to
find the download and go e-books. With that love in mind what a
better unit study for us to do together than the Valentine study.
We are a hands on family, creative and artistic, Lapbooking is our
learning style of choice. The Valentine Unit study is the perfect match
for our family. The unit is broken into a five day study. You could
stretch it longer I am sure with all the web links and ideas
within the unit. Each day children will do a little of the lapbook learning
all about love. They will learn the history of Valentine’s Day,
How Valentine’s day is celebrated around the world, how to make
candy hearts, how the heart works, and bible verses containing
the word love. All of the planning is completely done for you. A list
of books is included and categorized by day to go along with each lesson.
There are so many book choices. We love to read as a family. It is so
nice to have so many options just in case our small library doesn’t carry
one of the titles. You will find links to you tube to aide in the learning
process and links to learn and craft. With this e-book we will be able to
complete work in History, Science, Art, Writing, Vocabulary,
Home economics, and Bible. A lot of the time I open an e-book and
I am disappointed at the lack of creativity. With the download and go
this was not the case. Not only will we learn about love but I can
show them love and care as we go through this lesson. I have children
ranging in a wide span of ages from elementary to high school and I
believe this can be adapted to any age of learning. Finally a project we
can all work on together.

Outside My Window....
The sun is shining and the snow is everywhere.
At least 3 foot of snow fell over the weekend.

I am Thinking.....
That it is great to homeschool. One can go sledding on their
lunch break and use the big hill when all the neighbor kids are
in the school building sitting. Sledding can be gym class. Lots
of exercise there.

Health Care....
Unbeknown to me.. Dad ran out of his meds before
the winter snowstorm. He has been out of meds for
about a week now. He will be picking them up on Monday.
I'll have to keep better tabs on that. I should know that he
is not real good at managing those type of things.

He did manage to shovel us out even with his
heart condition. I wish his job could have seen him. Maybe
they would take him back to work. I hated seeing him do that
but he took lots of breaks. He even shoveled out our neighbor
who in the fall had fallen of his roof working on it.

Our Family Superbowl party messed me up on that one.
Dad made Stromboli's Chicken wings, meatballs, had chips,
cheese puffs, nachos, cupcakes, and deviled eggs. What
a combo...Lots of leftovers.

Family Update...

I am sure you have wondered where I have been this week.
It has been a very interesting one to say the least. I missed
sharing with all of you. I thought a few times to try to write
but the time just wasn't available.

The children worked very hard on their lessons. Superboy
was frustrated so often. I felt like I was constantly pushing him.
He has gotten into long division and he absolutely hates it.
He knows all the steps. When he does them all he is ok but
he tries all the time to do it in his head. For most people
this does not work. For Superboy it does not work either.
So he would write the answer to one. Then I would fuss
him for not writing the problem out. Then he'd write it out
and get it correct , turn around and not write it again.
After several times of this my patients was gone. Toad
took him upstairs then and walked him through making
sure he'd write each step..

Yes, Toad has been here all week. He was planning to
go to school in Pittsburg but looks like his housing fell through
and now may have to transfer here. With him here the kids
have been stubborn about doing much of anything. Most of the
time they just want to follow him around. Which is making him
nuts and us. As the days go they are getting more and more used
to him being around, which has enabled me to type up this post.
With Toad here the house feels so full. Especially when his girl
and her son come over too. The kids are all running around and
yelling. Today everyone is coming over for the Superbowl and
sleding of course.. Here in my town we had about 3 foot of
snow dropped on us..

I barely noticed the snow till today. The last few days I have been in bed
with a nasty stomach flu. The site or smell of food would send me
off packing. Today I finally am feeling better and can maybe
enjoy the snow and a little food too. Hopefully the baby doesn't
get it or anyone else for that matter. It was some rough stuff.

Hoping to be posting more this week. Have some
Fun Valentine crafts to post. :)

A Day of Silence..

The snow fell again last night, covering the ground in a
beautiful white. Silence blankets the earth. I lay in bed
extra long this morning. Enjoying the feel of the sheets.
Listening to the house wake. Princess was stirring around
extra early. Toad is here for the week and she wanted to
show off her new cooking skills. The children are so full of joy.
Spirit dances from here to there he is so excited that his big
brother is here for a visit.

Sweet Pea is nestled next to me. I can feel her wiggle a little.
She makes her sweet baby sounds. Soon she will be wide
eyed and ready for the day. I love how the snow makes me
feel. Like I can just snuggle under my comforter and have a
good excuse to stay in bed longer. Alas Sweet pea is awake
and smiling all over. What a way to start the day, carefree,
no worries. Just big eyes shineing to see what this world has
in store exploring, learning and growing.

The day goes on... giggles, smiles, books, and papers.
A big pot of vegtable soup simmers on the stove. The
carpet is swept and I run my toes through the fibers. Something
about a new clean carpet. Children are snacking on Sweet tarts.
It has been a busy week. Dental appointments, Dr. appointments...
trying to find peace in all the running around. I sigh and
take a deep breath as I peer out the window. I can see
the silence outside. The coating that calms the earth covering
it in peace. I take it in with a deep breath with the noise
echoing behind me. I barely hear a thing. I whisper to God
blessings, turn and join the giggles and papers once more...
The silence breaks.

Keep in Touch

I would love to hear from you. Feel free to comment or leave a message in my message box. I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thank- you for visiting Angels of Heart.
